Ibukun Laughter Akinbo, a 300-level Chemical Science student who is currently recuperating from an arm injury at the Babacock University Teaching Hospital at Ilishan Remo, blamed the accident on the trailer driver who collided with the bus they were travelling in.
She said the collision made the container which was on the trailer fall on the bus, resulting in the deaths of her colleagues, The Nation reports.
"I sat with my cousin, Yetunde Aribiola, on the front seat during the journey. Suddenly, the truck collided with the bus in which we were travelling, which caused the container to fall on the bus. I noticed the door broke away and a heavy breeze threw me out of the vehicle," she said.
The students who lost their lives in the crash are Eunice Odubanjo Oluwadamilola, 200-Level Political Science, Mariam Omolade Ogunnoiki, 100-Level Education, Yetunde Aribiola Elizabeth, 100-Level Biochemistry, Suliat Adams Oluwatobi, 100-Level Accounting.
Others are Funmilayo Pampam Latifat, 100-Level Chemical Science, Christiana Asade Ibukun, 200-Level Law, Ayoola Sheriff Gbolahan, 100-Level Agricultural Engineering and Olatunji Dairo Michael, graduating student of Physics.
The accident has drawn wide spread condemnation from lecturers and students of the institution alike who called for government to take a tougher stand against the dangerous driving of truck drivers.
Reacting to the tragedy, Ogun State Deputy Governor Mrs Yetunde Onanuga regretted that loss of lives. Commiserating with the bereaved families, she said: "It is sad that the students died in their prime; at a time the country needs the younger generation to contribute their knowledge towards the growth of the society."
The students union of the university have demanded N10m each for the each dead students. It also called on the security personnel to stop taking accident victims to private hospitals.
In a release signed by the three student leaders, among their urgent demands is that the company, Ceplast Company, the owners of the trailer be thoroughly investigated for genocide.
